March Brought the Madness

Posted by Connor Nybo on 8th Apr 2016

Last week's NCAA Men's National Championship game was one of the most memorable in history, and will likely go on to be one of the most legendary championships in college basketball history. Villanova's epic shot to defeat No. 1 seeded North Carolina will go down in history as one of the best of all time. But is it better than other epic March match ups?

The 1982 National Championship between North Carolina and Georgetown was one of college basketball's most memorable games. The Tar Heels, led by James Worthy and Michael Jordan, defeated Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas 63-62. Jordan hit a midrange jumper with 17 seconds left to play, defeating Georgetown in a matchup of future Hall of Famers.

The 1979 game featured Michigan State and Indiana State in what is still the highest-rated college basketball game of all time. Future rivals Magic Johnson and Larry Bird met for the first time, preceding their historic NBA rivalry, with Johnson's Spartans edging the Bird's previously-undefeated Sycamores 75-64. The game got significantly more national attention, brought on by the two superstars, and remains one of the most important games in college basketball history.

2016's matchup will go down with these and other national titles in the record books as one of the best of all time. Anyone who watched any of these championships will not soon forget it, and gives basketball fans reason to look forward to next season.
